Moody commencement season concludes
Greg Thornton is interim president of Moody Bible Institute, a higher education and media ministry founded by evangelist D. L Moody in 1886. During Thornton’s 35 years of ministry at Moody, he has served in various roles, most recently as senior vice president of media.
In January 2018, the Board of Trustees announced a nationwide search for Moody’s next president, appointing Thornton to lead in the interim. He continues Moody’s long history of reaching across the globe, cultures, and generations to equip people with the truth of God’s Word.
Born in Chicago in 1958, Thornton trusted Christ at age 8 and was baptized with his father and older brother who became believers around the same time. When he was 10, Thornton’s family moved to McHenry, Ill., where he learned a strong work ethic from his dad on their sod farm.
Thornton enrolled at Moody Bible Institute intending to become a pastor, where he soon discovered his love for combining ministry and business. The day after his graduation in 1981, he got married and began his career as advertising administrator for Moody Publishers. After earning his MBA from Loyola University, Thornton continued in various positions at Moody until his 1991 promotion to vice president at Moody Publishers. In 2011 he became senior vice president of media at Moody, overseeing Moody Publishers and Moody Radio. Moody’s Alumni Association named Thornton Alumnus of the Year in 2015.
Thornton is a member of The Moody Church, where he serves as an elder. He and his wife, Grace, have been married for more than 35 years and have three children and five grandchildren. A daughter and son-in-law are also Moody graduates.
