Moody Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremonies
In the 2011 fall semester, Moody Bible Institute will be offering a Russian language class for its students. Lydia Wechsler, wife of Dr. Michael Wechsler, professor of Bible, will teach the course. The class has been previously offered at Moody and is in the course catalog, but has not been offered for the past few years.
“The determination to offer a course is the result of a combination of instructor availability and student interest,” said Dr. Bryan O’Neal, dean of the undergraduate faculty. “Lydia has taught Russian at Moody before and was available and willing to do so again.”
Student interest began with Courtney Mellinger, a sophomore Evangelism and Discipleship major, who wanted the opportunity to learn Russian.
“I wanted to take Russian because I hope to move to Russia to do full-time missions,” said Mellinger. “Getting a small background in Russian here at Moody will help me when I do language studies over there.”
Mellinger contacted several professors to see what opportunities were available to learn the language, and was told that at least 15 students needed to register in order for the course to be offered. As she spread information about the class by word of mouth, she found that a number of students were interested but unaware that taking Russian was an option.
“This class will provide a foundation of basic Russian and also make learning the language overseas much easier,” said Mellinger, “I am going to give my all to this class, knowing that it will be valuable in the ministry later on.”
