Pastor James Ford, Jr. named Alumnus of the Year

Pastor James Ford Jr., a 1984 graduate of Moody Bible Institute and senior pastor of Christ Bible Church in Chicago, was named the 2017 Alumnus of the Year by Moody’s Alumni Association.

James Ford

The award was given at The Moody Church during the evening session of Moody’s Founder’s Week conference on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The annual award honors a graduate who has “demonstrated loyalty to the kingdom of Christ through honorable character, ardent service and accountability to the Word of God.”

“Pastor Ford’s life and preaching has had a profound effect on many,” said Nancy Hastings, who presented him with the award. Hastings serves as the executive director of Moody’s Alumni Association. “Not only does his church benefit from his knowledge, but also the Church at large through his deep, rich voice heard over the radio and through his publishing ministry. I am always amazed by his ability to recall memorized Scripture and the creativity he incorporates into his sermons.” Hastings added, “Our alumni serve the Lord in many ways, and I am inspired by the way pastor Ford is living out the call of God on his life.”

Training for His Calling

In addition to being a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, he completed his master's degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has served on several boards, including the Baptist General Conference's Board of World Missions, the Ada S. McKinley Special Educational Services, Fellowship Christian Academy, and Moody’s Alumni Association.

An international conference speaker, seminar leader and Bible teacher, pastor Ford has also served as an adjunct professor at Moody Bible Institute and an instructor for Pacific Garden Mission’s Bible program in Chicago. He is also a special instructor at the Ecola Bible School in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and has taught many courses in the Greater New Era District’s Bible program.

Serving in the Local Church

He has been the senior pastor of Christ Bible Church of Chicago since 1982, and serves as the president of Impact Ministries, an outreach of the church dedicated to strengthening families in the South Shore Community of Chicago.

Under his pastoral leadership, the church has developed programs focusing on “making disciples who make disciples,” encouraging them to fulfill the Great Commission. Additionally, through his extensive counseling and speaking ministries, he has encouraged countless couples with pre-marital counseling, crisis marriage counseling, and marriage seminars that have been held across the country.

He has also authored several books focused on strengthening relationships and helping couples maintain godly marriages, including Moody Publishers’ When a Man Loves a Woman, When a Woman Loves a Man, and Seven Reasons Why God Created Marriage.

His 30-minute Bible teaching program, Treasured Truth, airs daily on Moody Radio, as well as more than 160 syndicate and affiliate stations nationwide and in some U.S. territories.

Married for more than 35 years, he and his wife, Leslie, have three children and nine grandchildren and live in Chicago.
