Moody Employee Making An Impact Part 2

Harrison Gunter, credit manager for Moody Publishers, is one of 10 employees in 2017 to travel on a short-term mission trip through Moody Bible Institute's annual Ministry Benefit.
Gunter, who has been on staff at Moody for more than 37 years, recently traveled to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he served at Indian Bible College (IBC). He collaborated with school administrators on how to create a safe environment for students.
Moody’s Ministry Benefit provides five consecutive days off each year for up to 10 employees to take part in a short-term mission trip.

IBC, where Gunter served for one week, is located near the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the United States and was founded in 1958. Their mission states, “Training at Indian Bible College will enable you to become a stronger believer and change the legacy of many Native Americans who desperately need a message of hope. Changing that legacy first means changing your mind to be more like Christ.” It is one of only a few institutions that has as its central mission the training of Native Americans for Christian leadership. Gunter has served IBC multiple times and continues to be invited back by the staff.
Along with his role at Moody, Gunter also served as a reserve police officer in Indiana for more than 20 years. With his passion for serving communities and providing a safe environment, once he learned that IBC had a great need in this area, he resolved to help them.
Creating a Safer School
Gunter is helping IBC create fire escape plans, emergency exit plans, emergency contact information for students, and much more. All aspects of the campus’s safety are being reviewed. Additionally, he is working with the college to have uniformed officers handle law enforcement, and to have the local hospital send a nurse to the campus weekly to provide basic health care for students.

Staff members also need to know the allergies of each student and have their contact information in case of an emergency. Gunter is helping ensure IBC uses best practices in these areas.
“I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to use my gifts to benefit other believers. I also appreciate Moody giving me the time to be able to serve.” said Gunther while reflecting on his time at IBC.
“Some may not immediately think of this as an area of ministry, but it absolutely is,” said Debbie Zelinski, vice president of Human Resources at Moody. “Because of Harrison’s counsel and hard work, students at IBC now have the opportunity to learn in an environment that is safe and serving their respective needs so that they can focus on being equipped to serve the Lord.”

When new students arrive at IBC this coming August, Gunter plans to return so he is able to implement a medical checklist and complete a safety survey with practical steps the campus can follow. There are areas within the campus that Gunter has identified as still needing attention. A ministry team will be coming in during the summer months to help add new safety protocols to some of the campus. Gunter will also be involved in those upgrades. Gunter retuned in May 2017, to attened meetings and the graduation commencement.
