Men’s Soccer Defends Championship

Update: Congratulations to Jacob Persson for being named the NCCAA Div. II Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). More information:

The Moody Bible Institute men's soccer team successfully defended their NCCAA Division II National Championship on Nov. 10 in Kissimmee, Fla., by defeating Northland International University (NIU) 1-0 in the final game of the championship tournament. This is Moody's fourth National Championship.

"Congratulations to the men's soccer team for defending their title," said Dr. Paul Nyquist, president of Moody. "The Moody community is proud of the team for their accomplishment and appreciative of how they represented us this year. We are looking forward to 2013 season."

After defending their NCCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship on Oct. 27, Moody was seeded number one for the Nov. 7-10 championship tournament that featured the top-eight-ranked teams in the nation. This was a particularly meaningful accomplishment to Coach Chris McHugh who began coaching the team this year. "It truly has been an honor and a privilege coaching this team," said Coach McHugh. "They were very focused throughout the season and our captains' goal was to win this tournament, so this was indeed special for all of us."

The team, despite a viral bug that plagued most players and Coach McHugh throughout the championship tournament, was able to hold their opponents scoreless. In the final game against NUI, Moody took an early lead of 1-0 in the first half and was able to hold that en route to the back-to-back championship.

Additional honors included: Chris McHughNCCAA Midwest Regional Coach of the Year; Ryan PattisonMost Outstanding Player of the Tournament; Jacob PerssonMost Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament; Midwest All-Region TeamRyan Pattison, Ethan Montesinos, David MacFarland, Andy Schnepp and Jacob Persson (also named Player of the Year).

Moody men's soccer finished out the regular season with an 18-2 record. For more information about the men's soccer team, please visit their Web page.
