2017 Commencement Season Concludes

Approximately 850 students across Moody’s three campuses will graduate this academic year.

Moody’s academic year concluded with four commencement exercises—two in Chicago, one in Spokane, Washington, and one in Plymouth, Michigan. Approximately 500 undergraduate and 135 seminary students took part in the ceremonies.

“These students join the over 45,000 Moody alumni serving around the globe,” said Dr. Junias Venugopal, provost and dean of education for Moody Bible Institute. “It has been an honor and privilege for Moody to be able to play a part in equipping these students and our prayer for them is that they will continue to grow and deepen their relationship with Christ and bring the gospel to where the Lord has called them.”

Moody Bible Institute conferred degrees on undergraduate students and distance learning students at a ceremony held at The Moody Church in Chicago on May 13. Graduating students completed studies in youth ministry, biblical languages, applied linguistics, communications, Jewish studies, music, intercultural ministry, pre-counseling, Biblical Studies and other majors.

Later that day, Moody Theological Seminary conferred certificates and degrees on 102 graduate students in Torrey-Gray Auditorium on Moody’s Chicago campus. In addition, Moody Bible Institute Distance Learning conferred a Master of Arts in Applied Biblical Studies on 49 students and a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership on 11 students.

James P. Eckman, president emeritus and professor of History and Biblical Studies at Grace University in Omaha, Neb., gave the address in both ceremonies. Eckman challenged the graduating students to be change agents like Martin Luther, who started the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago when he nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg Castle church door. “As Luther stood for truth and was willing to pay the ultimate price, so you stand for truth. Be change agents for Jesus to produce another reformation of the church,” he said. “Be that person wherever you are and whatever you do whom God will use to transform people, transform the culture, and transform the world.”

During the undergraduate ceremony in Chicago, Moody awarded Donnita Travis, founder and executive director of By the Hand Club for Kids, with an honorary Doctor of Divinity for a lifetime of exemplary service. After serving as a volunteer to children in Chicago’s former Cabrini-Green housing project for five years, Donnita stepped down as president of an advertising agency in the year 2001 to establish By The Hand Club For Kids, a after-school program for Chicago children. Now located in four of Chicago’s most under-resourced neighborhoods, By The Hand Club serves 1,270 kids and is dedicated to helping children have new and abundant life.

The Chicago commencements were streamed live online and were viewed by more than 3,633 people from 41 countries. About 35 percent of viewers were from outside the United States.
