Greg Thornton Named Chief Financial Officer
President of Moody Bible Institute, Dr. Mark Jobe, announced today that senior vice president of media, Greg Thornton, has been promoted to serve as chief financial officer (CFO). His appointment is effective July 1.
“Greg has a long history with Moody and is well known and well respected as a godly, wise, and humble leader by those inside the Moody family as well as our partners,” said Jobe. “Having served in leadership for many years including a tenure in 2018 as interim president, Greg has a deep understanding of our ministry, sound financial wisdom grounded in God’s Word, and great insights in operational efficiency and wise stewardship. He is the perfect choice as CFO during this season and I look forward to continue serving alongside him.”
In his new role, Thornton will lead Moody’s Finance and Treasury team, which includes Controllers, Treasury, Investments and Trust Administration, as well as Media Finance and Procurement. Thornton succeeds Ken Heulitt, who is retiring as CFO on June 30.

Thornton has been at Moody since 1981, most recently serving as senior vice president of media since 2011 where he has set the strategic direction and coordinated the efforts of both Moody’s media ministries, Moody Radio and Moody Publishers. Under his leadership, Moody Radio has grown to include more than 70 stations, several Internet stations and more than 1,500 affiliate stations that carry Moody’s original programming. Moody Publishers now includes more than 300 million books distributed in 71 languages and more than 130 countries, with renowned authors Gary Chapman, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, Tony Evans, Erwin Lutzer, J. Oswald Sanders, Juli Slattery, and A.W. Tozer.
“Ken has skillfully served with integrity and diligence, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to build on that platform with an outstanding staff who is focused on excellence and transparency,” said Thornton who is also a 1981 alum of Moody Bible Institute. “Dr. Jobe has cast a bold vision of doubling our impact by 2030, and I look forward to continue supporting this vision of more people being prepared and biblically grounded for their purpose and calling. While I will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of our media teams, I will continue to champion their efforts, as these godly men and women faithfully and creatively proclaim the glorious good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ each day.”
In addition to his service at Moody, Thornton serves in his local church as a Sunday School superintendent, elder, deacon, and teaching financial stewardship classes. He also served on the boards of global ministries, including the Christian Booksellers Association and Media Associates International, a global training ministry that equips and encourages Christian publishers, editors and writers in challenging places of the world. Thornton additionally served on the advisory boards of Naomi’s House—a ministry of The Moody Church, where he and his wife, Grace, attend—and Revive Our Hearts, an outreach of Life Action Ministries.
He and Grace have been married for 39 years, have three married children, and eight grandchildren.
